Plot - Ryan

The film tells the story of Dante Williams

the film is set around 2018 . A new  drug called Elysium  is causing epidemic around the world, the drug is know to cause vivid hallucinations, the substance is  highly addictive and it slowly eats away and  its  user. As this is a new drug no one really knows the extent of damaging the drug does but one thing is for sure take to much  and you will die.

There are few indications that some one is taking the drug, the only existing  indications that someone is taking Elysium is that  their eyes become blood shot and when close to death the users have been known to actually bleed from their eyes, The movie follows a  young addict called Dante, Dante is a fairly normal looking person average height average build dark hair ,  the movie deals with his addiction but also with his hallucinations caused by the drugs. In Dante's hallucinations we see the effect of the drug on his mind. He hallucinates that he is in a forest inhabited by horrible creatures who represent the problems in his life during these hallucinations he is also haunted by his loved ones begging him to help them, because the hallucinations are so vivid  he believes that his vision are real.

He begins to call this place limbo believing that his loved ones are trapped here waiting to go to heaven, however  As the creatures represent problems Dante believes he has to kill his loved ones Problems in order for them to gain passage to heaven. The movie follows Dante attempts to save his love ones but  the effect of the drugs always run off before he can save them, because of this Dante begins to up the dose so he has  more time in limbo to dpend in limbo  trying to save them . the movie also follows the effect of the drug on this real life he is so concerned about these hallucinations he lose his job and even forget to eat so he is slowly starving himself.

To make matters worse he has began to cry blood an indication that he is close to death because of this dante begins to plan to take a  lethal dose of the drug  in a final attempt to save his loved ones. During this last attempt to save his loved ones  he manages to save them at least in this mind he has saved them, but as we see him saving he loved ones in limbo this is a graphic match and we see Dante dying in real life.

                                                      Setting
: His apartment; The design of his apartment  especially his  room it is litter with  reference to similar ideas such as an alice in wonderland , The divine comedy or also books like 1984  and also a poster for DMC these are just some on the things other ideas are a computer that the matrix code flash up on a the screen. or even more subtle hints like a can of virility a Drink from DMC. from a window in his apartment two billboards can be seen one advertising The Soylent Corporation  and the other promoting a rehab centre claiming to cure addiction to Elysium

Limbo: I feel that the feel of limbo is very important for the overall success of a movie of this type. if you look at the pictures below we see different examples of how this can be done I personal like the lighting in the first picture but i feel the second photo looks much more menacing and imposing add would fit the feel of limbo much better

Creatures:

Music : Autopilot-Queens of the stone-age- I feel this music would be good for the scene in limbo as i feel it would set the tone of the scene as it has a very discentive lead guitar which i feel would add to the feel created by limbo  especially in the fight scenes.

Gonna see my friend-Pearl jam

Pool shark-Sublime- I feel this song would fit very well with the final attempt scene the song was wrote by Brad Nowell and in this song he is talking about his heroin addictions and how he knows it will kill him but he just can't stop taking it it a sad story and the lyric seem appropriate for the scene  "take it away but i want more, and more, one day i'm gonna lose the war".

Monologue-Ryan

Elysium(short pause) the latest drug craze to grip the world first - it was magic mushrooms, then coke, then heroin and now elysium, it's - well it's - different, take it in small doses and it's fine, cures all diseases or so they say.

Take a medium dose and that's when the side effects kick in - you begin to have incredibly vivid hallucinations of a scenic, peaceful  forest and tranquil landscapes. the ultimate high some user call it.

Take a large dose and these hallucinations take a turn for the worse you- you return to the same forest but it's completely distorted, it's horrible and eerie it scares you stiff and drives you insane. It's full of disgusting wretched creatures that chase and relentless hunt you down.

Monologue 2

Elysium(short pause) the new  drug craze to grip the world first - it was magic mushrooms, then coke, then heroin and now elysium, it's - well it's - different ( short pause) No one really  knows where it came from it  just started  popping up all the places - huh who knows and who really cares if it's cheap and effective  that's good enough  for me and clearly for a lot of other people.

Yes it's only hallucinations but-my god, they are vivid. Why do it then you say-well ask an addict why they take drugs or why an alcoholics drink  (long pause) it helps you forget, but more than that it's because, I-us-we... we (short pause) can't stop!

Music Influences

We took great influence from the various movies and media sources we researched before we planned our film, namely the likes of Donnie Darko, A Scanner Darkly and The Fountain. These all include classical or orchestral pieces and their instrumental raw sound is one of the defining characteristics of the Sci-fi genre as it is able to generate a unique emotive response from the target audience. Although in other movies such as The Fifth Element and such all include varying ranges of music, some which correlate with the codes and conventions of the Sci-Fi genre, these include: Opera/vocal pieces, trance or electronic sounding pieces and so on.

Plot Idea #1

The screen opens with static of a TV, then a news report flashes on the screen " ladies and gentleman..." more static cuts the news report . After about five seconds the news report reappear " there has been a mass disaster in london please stay with us we will give you all the information as it comes in..." more static wait 5 seconds " we are now learning know that this is not an isolated act we are getting reports from all of the wor.." more static cuts the news report  wait 10 seconds " ladies and gentleman i'm not quite sure how to tell you this (short pause) but people seem to be attacking each other we are ask you to stay inside  and stay away from windows and doors ...Good luck and.."  (static for 15 seconds) then the last news report appears  on the screen it's fuzzy compare to the rest " ladies this is our last broadcast before we begin transmitting the emergency broadcast we are learning that the dead in the streets seem to be rising this is the end i suggest you spend these final hours with you loved ones good night and god bless..." static again then the emergency broadcast begins.

after about 10 seconds the emergency broadcast goes static (wait 10 seconds) suddenly there is a burst on light and we see a man looking down at a camcorder he seems very worried and tears are begining to appear at the corner of his eyes  and we hear bashing on a door and screaming " My name is Alan White I'm with a group of survivors if you find this. it is the story of  our final hours " the time at the top right hand corner says 1:50:05  the screen again goes dark for five seconds then after five seconds  " Hey look a camcorder i wonder if it works" there is a flash of light and we see Alan staring at it, the time in the top right hand corners says 00:00:00  then the screen goes black and the title blends in "Survivors".

The Matrix Research

In terms of mise en scene matrix is typical of the the codes and conventions of the sci- fi  genre when we think of the mise en scene of the type of movies we think of things like virtual worlds, gadgets furtistic items. this movie seems to have all the thing. also the set design in this movie is very important for creating not only the sci-fi feel on the novel take for example  the set design  in the first screenshot below the wall says "Mobil ave" this is not done by chance this is a very deliberates choice of name as " Mobil ave" is     an anagram of limbo.  the set design  is very dilberatly set up  like that to convey this idea that Neo one of the protagonist is trapped here between the two worlds
it  can also be noted the everything is painted white which represent this idea perhaps of purity being linked to limbo. it is interesting the the lighting in both the clips is very dark and eerie feels this set up a much darker sci-fi. i also feel the use of of alice and wonderland are very interesting and also are engaging to an audience  "I imagine that right now, you're feeling a bit like Alice. Hmm? Tumbling down the rabbit hole?"  you stay in wonderland and i show you how deep the hole goes".  i feel it is a interesting use of something  with such an appeal as Alice in wonderland to give depth and some understanding to the movie.  i feel  we could include something simlar to this in our films perhaps in a more subtle like maybe like a dvd of Alice in wonderland used as part of the set design.

The Matrix is a film which appeals to both male and female audiences, however it mainly targets males. The target audience would  be around  15-25 years however it seems to lean more towards the the former i feel this due to its heavy action scenes which would attract a much younger crowd.i Feel this would be the many core  of it's audience . i don;t feel the more real appeals to women or older person due to the lack of a subtle character would would appeal to the groups in society however the matrix has a big enough audience from what would of being it target audience. that it doesn't really need to worry about attracting other groups in society.

Well the matrix itself is distributed by  Warner Bros. this seems to be a recurring distributed through out these films as both I am legend as well as the fountain are distribute by Warner Bros as do other movie in the Sci-fi genre. This I feel is because of the resources a group as big would have at it's

i feel that Social groups are represented  quite well in this film and this is quite evident throughout.
I feel

I feel the audience for this type of movie expected a lot of action things the gun fight chase scene  and martial arts which are all things found in the movie ultimately i feel the target audience for such a what something engaging but also thrilling to watch they want this also edge of you set type mentality with this type of film and ultimately  i feel the movie delivers on the front it  presents an engaging, thriller story and overall film which definitely meets the expectation for these films.

Pictures of Set

This is an image of the trees looking up into the sky, taking vertically below the tree.

This is an image of the forest, from a vantage point you can see the tops of trees.

This is the tree we have decided to use.

This was an experiment we did with a light so see if it would fit out scene, we later decided it didn't.

This is a panoramic picture of the forest we will be filming in.

Animation

Shooting Script (Second draft)

It starts off with a character staring up at the sky, it is a first person sequence as the camera slowly pans up to reveal the tree canopy as leaves gracefully and peacefully fall off and descend to the ground. suddenly the sky leaves and trees begin to flicker similar to a monitor, the outdoors environment quickly shifts between the foliage and the ceiling of an indoor room. Now the scene has changed into a room environment. A voice over begins with soft and gentle piano music in the background, the voice over begins talking about an object such as a drug or the equivalent being able to give the subject enhanced abilities such as perception and awareness, as a result you become more conscious of the physical world and so a hallucination occurs in which the subject is transported into a an apparent serene environment in which the advantages could be used to ones advantage, such as possibly the slowing down of time, being able to hear peoples thoughts and so one, essentially in this part of the monologue the audience is introduced to this drug and only its benefits. then suddenly the music begins to fade and the lighting darken as the scene changes to the main character facing a mirror and slowly raising his head to be revealed by the camera, blood seems to be dripping from his eyes and nose as the monologue turns darker in turn. An eerie buzzing/booming sound can be heard as the camera zooms in towards the mirror. The character slowly closes his eyes and then the music stops as the scene fades to black, an eerie ambient noise of leaves rustling and the wind blowing can be heard as it one again switches to a Point of View shot as the camera rises and shows an outside environment, yet unlike the previous scene it is dark and more sinister. The camera cuts to a mid-close shot and begins to circle round the character followed by reverse zoom as the camera pulls away leaving the character in the distance and revealing more of the scenery, once zoomed back far enough what appears to be a person or monster can be seen hiding behind a tree... this scene fades to black and the movies title appears.

Psychoactive Drug:
                                 Name : Elysium
                                 Chemical formula : Ge2 N8 Es4 I10 SFeAr5
                                 Effects :

Small Dose : Enhanced perception (can see things clearer), attributes such as cognitive abilities are also increased. things appear in the surroundings that normally you wouldn't pay attention to (useful for solving police cases etc.).

Medium Dose : reality slows as they are transported into Light Limbo where the scenery is tranquil and peaceful. If taken at night one an delve into Light Limbo in their dreams and carry out actions until they wake.

Large Dose : Person is trapped in dark limbo facing inner demons, Dark Limbo is a sinister/  version of light limbo where it's always night.

Final Monologue

I don't remember...who I am, my.. name.... my past... but what I do remember... is fragmented... imprinted into my every thought, but inaccessible... "Through the fields of Elysium" echoes through my head...

...Elysium, the wonder drug. This was put on the market recently, legal and cheap.... this I remember... this I cannot forget...

A small dose will give you a high, enhance your mental and physical capabilities.

Take more than advised, and well.. you end up where I am now... it shuts out the pain... the echoes... it's tranquil... at least for the time being..

But get too greedy... if you.. if you don't feed the addiction.. it becomes a plague... you end up.. neither fully alive or dead...

Final Plot

The Story begins with unnamed protagonist lying on the floor as the sequences flashes between indoor and outdoor environments. A voice-over alerts the audience to the presence of the drug "Elysium". The character is apparently suffering from mild amnesia. The character has no immediate recollection of his name or any details surrounding his situation. He remains with knowledge only of the drug Elysium. The character initially wakes up from taking a dose of the drug, and once the effects begin to wear off he suffers from withdrawal. After the protagonist takes a larger dose of this drug, he hallucinates that he is in the nightmarish rendition of Limbo. It is here that the protagonist is faced with his nightmarish reincarnations and personifications of his inner demons. As the protagonist is attempting to survive Limbo, memories begin to flood his mind throughout as he desperately tries to remember his past.

As the unnamed character silently stalks the shadows of Limbo while attempting to sneak passed the shades and demons, he becomes more and more affected by the darkness surrounding the world around him. He initially begins to recollect the events that transpired one hour before.

Twenty Four hours earlier: The unnamed character is held in a chair in distress, whilst shadowy silhouettes of a group of men can be seen through the mans blurred vision. A conversation occurs where the shadowy men comment on being "where it all began". It appears to be an interrogation, bloodied and dazed even the enigma fails to recollect the questions being asked. After numerous blows one of the men finally address the unnamed character as "Dante", before Dante is knocked unconscious by the torture.

Back in Limbo Dante is becoming more complacent and paranoid, stalking the shadows and remaining undetected. It is becoming more difficult as Dante begins to remember more of his past.

Forty Eight hours earlier: Dante is running with desperation in a dark hellish environment, which is conveyed as a hallucination while a group of sinister looking gas masked men track him. It appears as if Dante has been being chased for a significant duration by his exhaustion and clothes. The men eventually capture Dante and then render him unconscious.

Returning to Limbo, Dante remains without any further knowledge of who he is or his past, still plagued with despair and fear he is spotted by a shaded demon. Dante begins to flee and traverses the terrain with haste. As he is running, he experiences more memories.

One Week earlier: Dante appears to be wearing a hospital gown over his clothing, surrounding him appears to be other men and women in similar fashion. Dante feels uneasy. Then he hears a piercing loud noise in his ear as a voice can be heard clearly. A woman is heard giving Dante further orders about his 'current' assignment "remember gain their trust, find the source, supplier and anything of interest". Dante sneaks away from the group and eventually discovers the stash. The word Elysium is inscribed on the sides of the various drug packets and sachets. He scans local computer servers and discovers all the background information and dark truth about the drug, the parasite, the effects, the casualties of innocent lives, the true side effects and the real nature for constant global surveillance. A siren is raised and red lights begin to flash with intensity, Dante attempts to flee the scene whilst being pursued.

It returns to Limbo and Dante has become overcome by exhaustion as he limps to safety behind a scorched tree. Dante rests here thinking he is momentarily safe and once again begins to remember his past.

One Month earlier: Dante is sat in front of a group of suited board members in the lead chair. He is handed a classified file by one of his employees. It is stamped approved and he proceeds out of the room. As he walks he commences a conversation with another suited man, the other man briefs Dante of the assignment, to "infiltrate the group and discover information and status results of the drug". The man stops and winks at Dante "don't forget the field Data". Dante smirks and then is handed the Drug Elysium. He consumes the drug. The man replies "you will be referred to as Dante from this point".

Returning to Limbo Dante becomes surrounded by a group of Shades. As they draw nearer, Dante becomes more and more fearful. Dante covers his face with his hands and once again returns to his collective memory.

Six Weeks earlier: Dante is at his Desk with a small committee in-front of him. The men all collaborate in the conversation "side effects include nausea, hallucinations, paranoia, identity loss, amnesia and eventually death", "if taken in excess the parasite is allowed to grow" "it will take the hosts life if found or attempted to be killed or extracted" "the nano-tech contained within the parasite once attached to the host will give a constant stream of Data to the company". Dante remains silent throughout and, glimpsing at the file he has just been handed by the group, he addresses the men "We need raw field data. There is no other way to accurately assess the drug." He decides that he is the only one loyal enough to the company to be trusted with the role. He gives a summary of the assignments nature "to expose the drug to the world as a legal wonder drug, infect the worlds population with a parasite that will leave a nano-tech chip which allows for the subject to be monitored. If the drug is not taken in excess the parasite will die and remove all traces of its existence. This allows for complete global surveillance". Dante then stamp approves the file.

Dante returns to the present, caught in Limbo as he begins to assess the situation. Slow motion begins as the monsters creep closer. Dante cannot remember his true name or his life before 6 months ago but he begins to reflect on the mass carnage he has caused by the approval of the drug; the innocents killed and the effects felt world wide. He accepts his fate as the monsters come face to face with him. Suddenly he is ejected out of the world into reality, no filters, no distortion, as he wakes up in a sterile bed. He is left alone with his thoughts as he recovers in the bed.

A man appears to be assessing him and watching over him from outside the room. It is the man who he was talking to one month before. The man reveals that his memories were not entirely correct. He remembers what they wanted him to. The man addresses another, "he believes what we want him to believe. The experiment was a success. Not only are we able to survey a subject but we are also able to implant thought processes and memories without them truly knowing. That was the true goal of this operation". The man then addresses his inferior and tells him to bring in the next subject.

Influences - Jonathan

Major Motion Picture influences (Sci-fi) : A Scanner Darkly, Alien, Sleepy Hollow, Total Recall, Donnie Darko, Sin City (Art style), Matrix, Limitless, The Truman Show, 23, The Fountain, The Butterfly effect, 28 Days Later, Prometheus, Minority Report and Inception. These are the major movies that we have chosen to analyse in a larger depth; in relation to both the chosen genre of our film (Sci-fi) and in terms of presentation and the codes and conventions used. While all of these movies are Sci-fi or at least have Sci-fi influences (Sin City) they have been used to greatly inform all our decisions and planning. Below is a quick overview of some of the influences

A Scanner Darkly: The unique colours, the font style and flickering typewriter method of presentation of text and information to the audience (one month earlier), the classic music, the use of a Drug as a critical part of the story. This is our main influence of the drug Elysium, the use of the soundtrack using classical music (Moonlight Sonata) and our replication of the flickering effect. The hallucinations appear almost instantaneously once the movie begins, similarly we want to include our representation of Limbo almost instantaneously. The bitter-sweet ending.

Alien: The use of Dark and Bright contrasting colours, the unique title and well known presentation of the "Alien" font, the mixture of the horror hybrid genre. The use of an Alien or a parasite as the monstrous antagonist. Futuristic technology etc.

Sleepy Hollow: The use of Steampunk, the hybrid horror genre, the classical score, eerie ambient music and atmosphere.

Total Recall: The unique colour and set design which is clearly set in the future, characters costumes and make up distinguish what the time period is and is reflective of the genre. The presentation of adverts to display a companies product i.e Total Recall memories and the drug Elysium. The use of futuristic technology such as the nano-tech in our plot. The use of implantation of memories into a subject. Similar to Inception.

Donnie Darko: A dark mental antagonist, the use of the nightmarish world, "Frank"as a sinister in appearance creature and the presentation of the title in the sky. The eerie narration of the protagonist.

Sin City: The unique art and costume design (monochrome with one colour highlighted).

Memento: the unique presentation of showing the movies time line back to front, as the movie is played almost backwards as earlier events are played in sequence throughout the movie.

Aside from these major influences other media has influenced us greatly such as Greek mythology (Fields of Elysium), Silent Hill (the use of a nightmarish version of the world), Devil May Cry (the use of the world of Limbo). Resident Evil adverts and trailers promoting the fictional umbrella products. Breaking bad is also an influence for the title, using the chemical symbols "Li" of the periodic table.

----------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully the use of all these influences such as an early created enigma, various uses of the codes and conventions of the Sci-fi genre, such intricacies as referencing Greek and various other Mythology and creating our own chemical formula which is a play on words, the use of an interesting plot and character the use of playing out the story backwards, the twist at the end, the unique presentation and original creation of the Drug Elysium and the use of: classical music for the unnerving effect while still remaining very Sci-fi influenced, the Sin City art effect shown in Limbo, the colour, costume and set design (all of which have been influenced by other films in which I have analysed).

Mise en scene (Final)

Location: We intend to use both an indoor and outdoor environment and for continuity we wish to keep these variables constant throughout filming. We will be using the following locations:

                       - Forest (an outdoor environment with foliage and fairly large trees will portray this)

                       - Bedroom (an indoor environment with a bed and white ceiling will be used)

                       - Bathroom (an eerily lit indoor space with a mirror and sink will be used for this)

Costume/Make up Design: For attire we wish our character Dante to have both a casual but unusual costume design, we will be using:

                        - Black long sleeve under-shirt
                        - Red short sleeve over-shirt
                        - Black and grey scarf
                        - Black trousers
                        - Black Converse trainers

                        - Dark messy short-medium hair
                        - Smeared blood across cheeks (dripping from eyes)

Props: Concerning our props our main focus is on creating an enigma and an atmosphere, both the character Dante and this drug Elysium are intended to be portrayed in this way. For this the following props will be used:

                         - Bottle of pills
                         - Drug capsule
                         - Mirror

Actors: We decided that the most appealing outcome was for one of our group to be the protagonist of this film, this was decided because we know the character better than anyone else, we know how we wish for him to be presented and his mannerisms and personality. We chose Jonathan because his appearance correlates with the character of Dante the most.

                         - Jonathan McChesney

Mise en Scene: We wish for the introduction to our movie to begin fairly bright with warm colours in an outdoor scene with available light illuminating through the trees (Donnie Darko influenced), then artificial light will be used in the indoor (bright warm colours) bedroom environment as the scenes begin to flicker (Matrix influenced), this leads into the bathroom mirror scene (Donnie Darko influenced) which is presented using artificial light and back lighting, ending our introduction is a fairly dark and atmospheric scene in the same forested area as before, artificial lighting (flashlights) will be used to give basic lighting and toning (Dark cold colour design) to the scene (this scene uses the same monochrome with a single highlighted colour art design as Sin City).

'Limbo'

Above is our listed opening credits, this list is informed directly from the Alien opening title sequence as shown below:

The opening title sequence should be fairly short so as not to diminish the remainder of time available for our short opening to our movie. We have taken direct influence from both this opening sequence and the likes of Donnie Darko and A Scanner Darkly, not only the text but rather the font, colour scheme and atmospheric presentation ( Sci-fi feel as shown above - adheres to the codes and conventions of the Sci-fi genre).

For our opening title we have experimented with various opening titles sequences, ranging from basic descriptions of the drug Elysium, a static flickering image of the title 'Limbo' (influenced by A Scanner Darkly) to a promotional advertisement style title influenced by the likes of Resident evil. These where just basic designs and could possibly be used in post production, they do not have any credits and are only a concept design. These designs are presented below: the music used is from the video games Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil, both which follow influences and the Codes and Conventions of the Sci-fi genre.

We intend to use these templates and the Donnie Darko, A Scanner Darkly and Alien introduction specifically as influences for our title and introduction sequence. Credits will appear on falling leaves as they descend, this is at the start of the sequence (informed by A Scanner Darkly) and the title will be displayed at the end of the short movie intro similarly to the presentation style in Donnie Darko.

Below is our initial attempt at creating some basic trailers and promotional advertisements for both our movie "Limbo" and the drug "Elysium".
